Case Hardening: What is it?

A material processing technique called case hardening is used to make metals harder on the outside. A very thin coating of metal is produced as a result of case hardening that is noticeably tougher than the bulkier volume of metal underneath it. The process of case hardening nearly always needs high temperatures. A metal’s crystal structure can be changed during heating, or the outer surface can have new elements added, to change the metal’s composition and produce hardening. Case hardening is often carried out after the majority of other fabrication operations have been finished since hardening techniques decrease formability and machinability.

Case Harden: Why?

Instead of attempting to harden a complete metal piece, a material should be case-hardened for a number of reasons. Efficiency is one of the causes. Heating a metal’s outermost surface as compared to its full cross section requires less time and energy. Large-scale manufacturing processes may see significant cost reductions as a result of these improvements. Performance is another factor in the widespread adoption of case hardening. Having a metal with a harder outside and a more malleable inner might be helpful. This may be seen, for instance, in situations where a metal must be able to withstand abrasion while still being able to withstand impact without completely breaking.

Which Metal Types Can Be Case Hardened?

The only metals that can be case hardened are typically ferrous ones, however there are few exceptions, such when some titanium or aluminium alloys are nitrided. Ferrous metals that are frequently case-hardened include:

Steel with low carbon

A high carbon steel

Forged iron

Low alloy, high strength steel

A stainless steel.

20MnCr5 Case Hardening Steel:

The case-hardening steel 20MnCr5 has a low carbon content, good hardenability, and strong wear resistance due to the hardening process’ high surface hardness. A benefit of the tiny grain size is high ductility and fatigue resistance. At the surface, this combination of characteristics offers wear resistance, fatigue strength, and impact strength.
