The EN 10083/1045/C45 standard specifies the medium carbon steel grades C45 and EN8. They differ slightly in their mechanical characteristics and have various chemical compositions. A quick comparison of their usual chemical compositions is provided below:

- Silicon (Si): 0.40% max
- Manganese (Mn): 0.50% – 0.80%

Mechanical Characteristics:
Tensile Strength: Depending on heat treatment, usually between 600 and 800 MPa.
Yield Strength: When heated, it changes.
Hardness: The appropriate amounts of hardness can be attained by heat treatment.

- Silicon (Si): 0.10% – 0.40%

Mechanical Characteristics:
Tensile Strength: Depending on heat treatment, between 565 and 710 MPa.
Yield Strength: When heated, it changes.
Hardness: When normalised or hot rolled, it typically has a Brinell hardness of 170 to 210.
- C45: The EN 10083 standard specifies C45 as a medium carbon steel grade. This popular steel grade’s good mix of strength, hardness, and wear resistance make it useful for a variety of applications.
Properties: C45 has excellent strength, weldability, and machinability. Because of its higher carbon content, it has better hardenability, allowing for the desired mechanical qualities to be achieved through quenching and tempering.
Applications: C45 is frequently used in gears, shafts, machinery parts, automotive components, and other applications requiring strength and resistance to wear.
- EN8: Similar to C45, EN8 is another medium carbon steel grade that is specified in the EN 10083 standard. Due to its affordable price and well-balanced qualities, this engineering steel is highly sought for.
